OUTBOUND CALIFORNIA · ACTIVITY DEEP DIVE

Fishing California

Every way to fish California, from a bluefin trip out of Point Loma to a golden trout in an 11,000-foot Sierra basin. Offshore, the San Diego long-range fleet chases tuna and yellowtail, Half Moon Bay and the Golden Gate run salmon and rockfish, and Bodega Bay and Fort Bragg add crab. Public piers — Shelter Island, Crystal Pier, Santa Monica, Ventura, Stearns Wharf, Pacifica — are free to fish and need no license at all. Surf and bay water covers Coronado's Silver Strand, Malibu, the north coast redtail perch beaches, Tomales and Humboldt Bay, and the vast California Delta. Inland, Clear Lake and New Melones hold trophy bass, Shasta and Trinity hold nearly everything, and the Sacramento, Feather, American, Klamath and Trinity run salmon and steelhead, while the wild Smith remains the state's premier steelhead river.
