California's iron way scene is young, small, and stranger than most: exactly two commercial via ferratas exist in the state. The Tahoe Via climbs the fabled Tram Face at Palisades Tahoe across four routes, from the beginner Loophole to the Great Escape, and Mammoth Mountain runs a six-route network including a suspension bridge and the exposed Nose. Both are guided-only, both provide all the hardware, and neither requires climbing experience. But California has been bolting iron to rock for over a century, and the do-it-yourself classics are the real legends: the 1919 Half Dome cables, the cable-guarded switchbacks near Whitney's summit, the 1931 CCC stairway up Moro Rock, the vertigo catwalk stairs to the Sierra Buttes lookout, and the ring-bolts and ladders of the Mojave's slot canyons. Filter by route type, hardware, difficulty, exposure and cost.
