parks detail

Hook
California's largest state park — 600,000 acres of badlands, palm oases, and superbloom country
More
Named for the 1774 Anza expedition and the bighorn (borrego) that still watch from the ridges, it's the largest state park in the contiguous-US system — with 500 miles of dirt roads, slot canyons, palm-oasis pupfish, and Ricardo Breceda's roadside metal dragons. Superbloom years crash the town of Borrego Springs; summer heat is Death Valley-serious.
