- The restored town founded in 1908 by Col. Allen Allensworth as a self-governing Black community
- More
- Allensworth — Army chaplain, formerly enslaved, the highest-ranking Black officer of his day — founded the only California town established, financed, and governed by Black Americans. Restored schoolhouse, church, and homes host the annual Rededication festival; the town's water-rights sabotage story is told unflinchingly.
