Tidal note
Humboldt Bay's tidal exchange is dramatic — 6-foot swings. The narrow bay entrance near King Salmon creates strong currents. Stay inside the bay, particularly away from the entrance. Incoming tide is the paddling window for most of the bay's channels.
Intl tip
The Avenue of the Giants — 31 miles of old-growth redwood highway through Humboldt Redwoods State Park — is 45 minutes south of Eureka. Humboldt Bay paddling combined with a drive through the Avenue of the Giants covers two of Northern California's most extraordinary natural experiences in a single day.
