Route notes
The highest summit in the Lower 48 by its classic climber's line — John Muir's 1873 Mountaineers Route, a steep couloir and a final class-3 scramble that trades the crowded Main Trail for a real alpine outing up the East Face side
Beta note
~14,505 ft; the Mountaineers Route is Class 3 (steep snow in spring); a serious, exposed alpine day
Intl tip
The classic climber's line up the Lower 48's highest peak — the Mountaineers Route, John Muir's 1873 couloir from Iceberg Lake to a notch, then an exposed class-3 scramble. A steep snow climb in spring (ice axe, crampons, self-arrest), loose and serious when dry. It does NOT use the Whitney Trail lottery — it's approached via the separate North Fork of Lone Pine Creek permit (reserve up to 6 months ahead). Acclimatize and start pre-dawn.
Directions note
Park at Whitney Portal (8,374 ft) — Mountaineers Route leaves the main trail up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek
