A classic big climb to a forested 5,500-ft summit in North San Diego County — from hot chaparral up into lush pine and cedar, crowned by the historic Palomar Observatory (legendary telescope since the 1940s). Famous paved climbs plus dirt/forest-road options for gravel adventure, with sweeping backcountry views. Demanding: long sustained climb, summer heat down low, limited water (cooler months best). Ushpa
P3+ and SDHGPA site protocols required. San Diego sites are 'big air' — powerful sharp mid-day thermals. Low-airtime pilots should fly only at day's end. Contact an active local pilot for current protocols.
Intl tip
The Palomar Observatory (home of the historic 200-inch Hale Telescope) is open to visitors and worth combining with a flying trip. North San Diego County's backcountry — Palomar, Julian, and the surrounding mountains — is a scenic, underrated corner of the region.
