- Intl tip
- The historic heart of California condor country — rugged Los Padres backcountry north of Fillmore, set aside to save the last wild condors. The sanctuary core is closed to protect the birds, but you can scan from fringe backcountry viewpoints (the drive to Dough Flat is a traditional favorite) for condors, golden eagles, and prairie falcons. For the committed only: rough remote roads, hot and waterless country, and luck-based sightings (far lower odds than Pinnacles or Big Sur). Come self-sufficient with tempered expectations.
