How to read this atlas. Every unit is labeled with its official classification — the name tells you what to expect. National Parks are federal (separate passes); everything else is California State Parks, where a day-use fee usually covers your vehicle. The scope here is the four headline classifications, plus California's three rarest labels: its single State Historical Monument (Hearst Castle), single State Seashore (McLaughlin Eastshore), and five beloved State Natural Reserves that no honest atlas could leave out. Reserves protect fragile places — expect stricter rules: trails only, no dogs, no drones, and at Point Lobos, timed entry on busy weekends. A handful of listed units (Sutter Buttes, Marsh Creek) are state property not yet open to visitors — they're mapped for completeness and flagged in their entries.
